Matthew J Browning

Titanic Tartans is a testimony to perseverance and dedication in the face of difficulties; to care over little things; to sustaining faith at a time of personal loss; to believing that truth will prevail. It also tells the story of how the author was drawn into what must ultimately be seen as a fascinating work of revisionist research on a subject very much at the heart of the culture of a people throughout their history. There is only one word to describe it: ‘Identity’.

Titanic Tartans is a good read, and puts into perspective the proper place of tartan and the kilt. It also opens the door to historical study in a vast field of research embracing the questions, “Who am I? What am I? Where do I come from? Why?”.

Take the opportunity to get your copy today, and a ‘please’ in the author’s ear will get you his signature on it. At £9.99 it’s a rich prize for such a small investment.

LATEST

A new edition of Michael Montgomery’s From Ulster to America: The Scotch-Irish Heritage of American English recounts the lasting impact that at least 150,000 settlers from Ulster in the 18th century made on the development of the English language of the United States. This new edition published by the Ulster-Scots Language Society documents over 500 ‘shared’ vocabulary items which are authenticated by quotations from both sides of the Atlantic. A searchable online version of this dictionary is now also available here.

FORTHCOMING

The Ulster-Scots Academy is currently working on the digitisation of Dr Philip Robinson's seminal Ulster-Scots Grammar and the English/Ulster-Scots part (with circa 10,000 entries) of a two-way historical dictionary of Ulster-Scots. These projects are planned to be completed and available on the site in 2016.
