Those who read the last issue of Ullans may remember enjoying ‘Poems by a Railway Lad’. It was one of our members, Darren Gibson, who was good enough to send us the work of Robert Brown, a forebear of his own. Having launched his own blog just recently, Darren has got off to a flying start with writing in Ulster-Scots. He has now sent us two poems from his own pen, and we hope to feature his work again in future issues.
Oor ain strange lan
Nae mair the taak we hard as weans,
Noo aa but gan frae freenly hames,
Loast amang mair recent claims,
Left ahint oan mossy stanes.
An mair than taak is loast an gan,
For affen wurds prescribe the man,
An leaves iz noo at dailygan,
Strangers in oor ain strange lan.
Yet still anaa a wheen are fun,
Wha held their ain whun aa gave grun,
An kep alive their faithers tongue,
In howps o better times tae cum.
