Editorial Note: In the new millennium one of the main players in the Ulster-Scots movement will be the Ulster-Scots Academy. The Academy was established in 1993, with Professor RJ Gregg as its Rector and Dr Ian Adamson as its President, to encourage serious academic study of Ulster-Scots. It will continue at the cutting edge of Ulster-Scots language planning as issues such as spelling standardisation, teaching resources and modern usage are progressed. One aim of the original group (largely co-lateral with the Ulster-Scots Language Society officers) is to create a body of workers (initially all volunteers) to increase academic research into Ulster-Scots. Already, a most significant advance has been to accommodate the website work of Ian Parsley.

Website

There has existed for some time a website to promote academic study of Ulster-Scots, which can be found at:

http://www.geocities.com/parsleyij/ullans.html

[Editor’s note (August, 2015) — this site no longer exists.]

The site is currently under expansion and already includes:

  • An introduction to Ulster-Scots
  • Updated information on Ulster-Scots events
  • New Ulster-Scots poetry
  • On-line academic essays
  • An on-line dictionary
  • An extensive reading list
  • Links to other Scots language and Ulster dialect resources on the Net

Contact details for the Academy and other Ulster-Scots organisations can be found on the site.

Electronic Mailing List

In fact the main purpose of the website is to support the electronic mailing list, whose members regularly receive updated information on Ulster-Scots issues and events in their inbox, and debate on the development of Ulster-Scots speech and writing is encouraged. Most importantly, the list has raised awareness of Ulster-Scots worldwide (the majority of list members are in North America) and through the list the Academy has been able to support Ulster-Scots societies in North America and assist the setting up of new ones.

LATEST

A new edition of Michael Montgomery’s From Ulster to America: The Scotch-Irish Heritage of American English recounts the lasting impact that at least 150,000 settlers from Ulster in the 18th century made on the development of the English language of the United States. This new edition published by the Ulster-Scots Language Society documents over 500 ‘shared’ vocabulary items which are authenticated by quotations from both sides of the Atlantic. A searchable online version of this dictionary is now also available here.

FORTHCOMING

The Ulster-Scots Academy is currently working on the digitisation of Dr Philip Robinson's seminal Ulster-Scots Grammar and the English/Ulster-Scots part (with circa 10,000 entries) of a two-way historical dictionary of Ulster-Scots. These projects are planned to be completed and available on the site in 2016.
