United States Ullans Language Society

As aforementioned, the establishment of the Ulster-Scots website has enabled Ulster-Scots to cross the Atlantic and as a result I set up the United States Ullans Language Society in early 1999.
The society aims to foster a love and respect for the Ullans (Ulster-Scots) culture and language with an emphasis on the language’s revitalisation as a vehicle for communication and belles letters.
Its goals (as per its manifesto) are:
- To inform the Ullans USA Electronic Mailing List board about the Ullans language and literature.
- To function as a conduit on the status of the language in Ulster to persons interested in the language’s revitalization.
- Disseminate language materials currently available, particularly relating to grammar.
- Encourage and support a Bible translation into Ullans.
- Encourage creative writing in Ullans.
- Promote language rights for Ullans speakers in Donegal.
It adds that it is open to all people of all creeds, colors and races and avoids political or religious agendas. In addition, it aims to promote links between Appalachian and Ullans (Ulster-Scots) communities.

The Ulster-Scots Academy has been an integral part of the Ulster-Scots Language Society since 1993. The name "Ulster-Scots Academy" is registered to the USLS with the Intellectual Property Office.

A new edition of Michael Montgomery’s From Ulster to America: The Scotch-Irish Heritage of American English recounts the lasting impact that at least 150,000 settlers from Ulster in the 18th century made on the development of the English language of the United States. This new edition published by the Ulster-Scots Language Society documents over 500 ‘shared’ vocabulary items which are authenticated by quotations from both sides of the Atlantic. A searchable online version of this dictionary is now also available here.
FORTHCOMING
The Ulster-Scots Academy is currently working on the digitisation of Dr Philip Robinson's seminal Ulster-Scots Grammar and the English/Ulster-Scots part (with circa 10,000 entries) of a two-way historical dictionary of Ulster-Scots. These projects are planned to be completed and available on the site in 2016.
