Comments: ‘The Hamely Tongue’ has been widely acclaimed as the authoritative record of contemporary (surviving) Ulster-Scots in its heartland of County Antrim where James Fenton faithfully recorded his dictionary items among a network of other native speakers over a 30-year period. This searchable online version of his book takes its text from ‘Part One’ of the fourth edition of 2014 and includes over 3000 word entries. The book preliminaries, supplementary word lists and end matter have been excluded.

breed1 ~ bread. bocht breed bought (as distinct from home-baked) bread. breedcairt the cart or van in which bread is carried for door-to-door sales. breedman a travelling bread salesman. dipped breed bread dipped in hot fat (also dip). divil’s breed (see divil). hardbreed oatcake. loaf-breed pan or cottage loaf (as distinct from soda-breed, etc.). soda-breed bread baked on a griddle with white flour and buttermilk, with baking soda added. sweet breed cakes, pastries, etc. wheat-breed bread made from wheatmeal.

A new edition of Michael Montgomery’s From Ulster to America: The Scotch-Irish Heritage of American English recounts the lasting impact that at least 150,000 settlers from Ulster in the 18th century made on the development of the English language of the United States. This new edition published by the Ulster-Scots Language Society documents over 500 ‘shared’ vocabulary items which are authenticated by quotations from both sides of the Atlantic. A searchable online version of this dictionary is now also available here.

FORTHCOMING

The Ulster-Scots Academy is currently working on the digitisation of Dr Philip Robinson's seminal Ulster-Scots Grammar and the English/Ulster-Scots part (with circa 10,000 entries) of a two-way historical dictionary of Ulster-Scots. These projects are planned to be completed and available on the site in 2016.
