tittle1 ~ n. the titlark or meadow-pipit (usu. only — and mistakenly — in: ‘The cuckoo an the tittle/The leverock an the lark/The heatherbleat, the mire snipe/Hoo mony burds is that?’ ‘Tittle’ here should be gowk as the answer is, of course, three; the pipit is often seen chasing the cuckoo, and the confusion probably arises from this).
